Does Louisiana Medicaid cover GLP-1s for weight loss?
Louisiana Medicaid covers a weight-loss drug but not a GLP-1 on that indication. Coverage for type 2 diabetes, for Wegovy's cardiovascular indication and for Zepbound in moderate to severe sleep apnea is required of every state program regardless. So the practical question at a denial is rarely "does my state cover it" but "which indication am I being prescribed this under". The status is read from the state's own document, Louisiana Medicaid Services Manual, Chapter 37: Pharmacy Benefits Management Services, rather than from a national summary. The exclusion is permitted rather than required. Section 1927(d)(2) of the Social Security Act lets a state Medicaid program leave out drugs used for weight loss, so this is a state decision, not a fact about the drug. Where the answer is no, the cheapest verified cash route on this site is $129 a month (compounded, not FDA approved; FDA warning letter). A no here is about the obesity indication alone.
What Louisiana changed, and when

Act 898, signed on 9 June 2026, requires Louisiana Medicaid to cover FDA-approved weight-loss drugs, on criteria the Department of Health sets and with no step therapy — but it takes effect only when a separate act appropriating money for it does. Until then the current rules stand.
Whatever Louisiana decides about obesity, federal law still makes it cover a GLP-1 prescribed for type 2 diabetes, Wegovy for cardiovascular risk reduction and Zepbound for obstructive sleep apnea — the exclusion is written against the use, not the drug.
