Does Medicare cover Mounjaro? Yes for diabetes (2026)
Mounjaro is tirzepatide under the diabetes label, and Medicare treats it that way: covered as a diabetes drug, excluded for weight, absent from the Bridge. Tirzepatide for weight or for sleep apnea is Zepbound, which is where both of those routes are.
Does Medicare cover Mounjaro?
Yes for type 2 diabetes. Mounjaro is approved to improve blood-sugar control and, on the label revised in August 2026, to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death, heart attack and stroke in adults with type 2 diabetes at high risk of them, and Part D plans cover it as a diabetes drug. Prescribed for weight without diabetes it is excluded, and the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge does not include Mounjaro; tirzepatide is on the Bridge only as the Zepbound KwikPen.
When Part D covers it: type 2 diabetes
Both indications require type 2 diabetes. The cardiovascular one added in August 2026 is limited to people with diabetes at high cardiovascular risk, so unlike Wegovy's it opens no route for anyone without diabetes.
A Part D plan can put Mounjaro behind prior authorisation or step therapy. Those are the plan's rules, not Medicare's, and appealable on the clock below.
Off-label use for weight is still a use for weight: a Mounjaro prescription for someone without type 2 diabetes falls under the same exclusion as Zepbound prescribed for weight.

Mounjaro is not on it. Not listed. The Bridge covers tirzepatide only as the Zepbound KwikPen — not as Mounjaro, and not as Zepbound vials or single-dose pens.

- No. Without type 2 diabetes, Mounjaro for weight is a use the Part D exclusion covers, and the GLP-1 Bridge does not list it. The Bridge offers tirzepatide as the Zepbound KwikPen, for $50 a month.
